About Lolicon
Japan is in its fourth decade of a depression. There are people in their thirties who have never held a job. They are known as NEETs (Not in Employment, Education, or Training) and freeters. They live with their aging parents in houses and condos buried under hundred-year mortgages. When the parents die, they will not be able to make expenses. Listless citizens speak of their "souls having a cold." Half of TV programming is animation (AKA animé); this being much cheaper than paying and making up actors: one voice artist (seiyu) may do dozens of voices across many series. The birth rate is so low that the population drops by over a percent per year. Social events are usually failures. There is strong public support for the production of life-like robots. Although Kawaii (see below) is strong, there is a large amount of androgynous dress for both sexes. The most popular form of literature among young women is BL (Boy Love) - detailing romance between young men.
About half of animé protagonists are school girls, ten to fourteen years of age, although there are some even younger. No matter how young they all seem to have adult figures - just smaller. There is a fair amount of nudity - particularly when the heroine changes from her everyday appearance to her 'powered up' state. The change is known as a Henshin. Animé is full of "fan service" - with a lot of up-skirt shots, action taking place at the beach or at pools; A lot of bare breasts exposed 'incidently.' The most popular genres are tsundere - explained elsewhere, and the harum: where a single male high schooler lives without parents, but with four or more nubile girls who vie to be his 'one.' The school girl look is very popular amongst young adults and constitutes part of cosplay across cultures and age groups. The Lolita and Doll looks are both very popular - even having clubs and associations throughout the larger cities abroad. Lolita (named for the Nabokov character) expresses a profound sexuality in the teenage girl while the Doll look tries to avoid any sensuality and mimics the cuteness and purity of the preteen girl. Each is a sub-class of the kawaii (cute) phenomenon. The word Lolicon is both a description of a class of pornography and its aficionados - who are usually considered a sort of paedophile or hebephile.
